This stationary horseback riding holiday in Portugal follows remote mountain trails along the northern border with Spain, inside Peneda-Gerês National Park. As a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the region is distant from the usual tourist destinations. You can still find oxen pulling the plough and the local breed of Castro Laboreiro dogs guarding herds of cows.
Your home base is Castro Laboreiro, a remote fortress village high in the mountains, famous for its ancient castle ruins, rugged mountain landscapes, and it remains deeply rooted in traditional shepherd culture.
The wild Garrano horses share the mountain here with the Iberian wolf. Even though the wolf is a rare sight, the wild Garranos often appear during the rides, to investigate the riders and horses in their territory.
Run by a family dedicated to horses, this tour will give you the chance to ride the friendly and beautiful Lusitano horses in mountain trails. Mainly in soft grass, the terrain allows for both fast canters and peaceful walks to enjoy the stunning landscape. This is a great trail for a confident and experienced rider. You have three day rides with picnics and three half-day rides so there is time to go on non-riding excursions and learn more about the area.
