Horseback Riding in Portugal

Alcainca Dressage Program

Overview

Both Portugal and Escola de Equitação de Alcainça have a long equestrian tradition starting with the Lusitano horse, which is itself a Portuguese national treasure.

Set on a hillside, Alcainça was originally built as traditional “Quinta”, a Portuguese country estate, complete with stables, indoor and outdoor schools, as well as an antique bull-fighting arena which is nowadays used mainly as a turnout for their horses.

This trip features lessons in Classical dressage or Portuguese equitation and introduction to working equitation with up to two lessons per day on magnificent Lusitanos, trained to a high level of performance.

There are both indoors and outdoors rings available and the instructor Mario can give lessons at any level. The program runs all year in this temperate climate. Accommodations and meals are on the property and there is an outdoor swimming pool and a small honesty bar.

Lodging is onsite at the riding center.

Three meals a day are provided and will be served in a dining room located off the riding hall.

The typical breakfast will be very European
consisting of milk, coffee, tea, juice, bread, butter, cheese and jams. Lunches consist of salad, meat, vegetables and fruit. Dinners will usually be salad or soup, fish, vegetables and dessert. Coffee, tea, red and white wines are always available during and after the meals.
Special dietary needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Please advise Equitours of your
requirements.

  • Overview:
The horses are either purebred or part-bred Lusitanos, trained from a medium to an upper level dressage standard; able to perform all lateral exercises such as shoulder in, or half pass to more advanced exercises like flying changes, piaffe and passage. The Lusitanos, which have the same origins as the famous Andalusians, are considered some of the finest horses in Europe. Together with their Spanish brothers, the Lusitanos were the first horses to be brought to the New World and are the ancestors of most American breeds. Classic dressage saddles with snaffles and/or double bridles are utilized. Or for the Portuguese equitation and introduction to working equitation the traditional Portuguese tack can be used.

Itinerary Summary

This program has been designed with a great deal of flexibility. Each day experienced riders can have lessons once or twice daily. Novice riders can be accommodated on request only, depending on availability.

Classical Dressage: The lessons focus on the principles of good contact, rhythm, and straightness towards collection, impulsion and self-carriage.

Portuguese Equitation:
Portuguese Equitation builds on the principles of classical dressage, with some differences in the exercises, the aids and riding style. Led by experienced instructors you are schooling
exercises and gymnastics using poles and pylons in all paces focusing on coordination, straightening, balance and activation of the hindquarters – the foundation for the
emerging discipline Working Equitation.

If you want to take a break from riding, you can experience a fun carriage ride into the countryside, drawn by two beautiful black Friesians.
