Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and a tourism destination of note. The primary attraction, the Victoria Falls themselves, need little introduction, but you can also undertake a wealth of activities, from game drives and bush walks to river cruises and helicopter rides.

Above the Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi River is wide, calm and placid, tourist activities include sunset cruises, canoe drifts, fishing, birdwatching and game viewing opportunities along the Zambezi National Park. Within the Park itself are several private safari lodges, which we visit as part of our multi-day trips. Below the Victoria Falls the Zambezi River, as it twists and turns its way through the Batoka Gorge, is home to some of the wildest white water rafting in the world, complete with adventure activities such as gorge swings and bungee jumps.

Victoria Falls town is surrounded by National Park, and wild animals roam freely, including elephant, buffalo, various antelope species, warthog, vervet monkeys and baboons. Associated predators such as leopard and hyaena are also found, and very rarely lion and wild dog are also seen. Many animals are often found in and around town, including elephants, buffalo and the occasional lion!

Beyond Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe offers the traveller a wealth of travel options, from the wilderness safari areas of Hwange National Park, the magical landscapes of the Matopas, iconic ruins of Great Zimbabwe, misty mountains of the Eastern Highlands to the sleepy shores of Lake Kariba. Born in Zimbabwe, our outfitter has traveled widely throughout the region, and after more than 30 years in the safari industry she is believes there are still many wonderful places to explore. She is very happy to advise and assist you in planning your Zimbabwe itinerary.

Low Season Specials

It is a truth that goes unacknowledged that the low season is one of the best times to ride. It’s a time to get back in the saddle and explore. During November and early December the temperature drops and the rains, we hope, begin. It is one of the most beautiful times of year as the gold dust haze of the dry season merges into the clear greens of early growth. Dramatic skies herald the possibility of rain and new life. There is a sense of a new world, new beginnings.

Through early December, January to March the softer ground and cooler temperatures make things easier for horses – you can ride faster and for longer. You may have to work hard to find elephant but it is one of the best times to see zebra and sable. There is always something even if it is just utterly beautiful scenery: a profusion of wild plants, and flowers, young animals, sweeping views and skies and of course the sheer joy of experiencing this magnificent area from the back of a horse. Even if it does rain it is never cold and there is nothing to beat the extraordinary drama of an African storm.

A ride based at Ursula Camp is awesome and something no rider should miss out on. So to encourage riders to experience this lovely camp and some of the best times of year to ride, we can offer at selected times at a truly bargain price.

Riding in Zimbabwe

A big draw of this ride is Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Wonders of the Natural World. It was only a half hour drive from our small, charming lodge with a very active waterhole; impala, eland, zebra, elephant and baboons all visited during our stay. Daily rides through the mopane woodland let to close encounters with a variety of big game, including large herds of buffalo. A highlight was tracking black rhino and we saw a total of 8 of these highly endangered animals during our... Read more
