Overview

The Homoki Lodge in Hungary offers fantastic riding opportunities in a setting celebrating the rich uniqueness of the area’s culture, where equestrian traditions run deep.

With options to stay in luxury yurts and ride Hungarian warmbloods through the southern puszta, the experiences echo traditional practices in totally modern and upgraded ways. The rides depart from the lodge each day, radiating in different directions to visit local points of interest, giving you some insight into the history and culture of the region.

The horses are fit and responsive, and the flat, sandy plains lend themselves to invigorating gallops. At the same time the staff is carefully attentive to your needs and can adjust the rides and pace as needed. The amenities of the lodge cater to your desires, with a pool and massage services available, with fabulous gourmet meals and suggestions for pairing with lovely local wines.

Breakfast is served with many options and lunch is either a picnic on the trail or back at the lodge. Dinners are not included but a three course dinner is offered each evening in the lodge or the outdoor terrace overlooking the pastures. Special dietary needs can be accommodated (except for vegan, kosher, or diabetic diets).
All drinks are an extra expense, and a variety of local wines and liquors are available.

  • Overview:
    The horses are around 16 hh and are ridden unshod. They are most suited to confident riders who have experience riding at speed over a variety of terrain. The breed was established at the Mezohegyes State Stud, selectively breeding Gidran, Kisberi, Achal Tiki, Nonius, North Star Furioso and Arabian horses to produce the Hungarian Sport Horse. Modern traditional Hungarian saddles are used.

The lodge can offer tours by fat-tire bike, jeep or horse and carriage and can also arrange archery lessons, boat tours, hiking routes, or sky diving. Yoga, massages and spa services also available.

The local area around Ruzsa, Szeged and Morahalom offers many cultural sights and activities, and the lodge is happy to help arrange visits and tours.

Transfer can be arranged from within Hungary (at extra cost), typically from Budapest International airport or Szeged train station.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Sunday: If transfer is part of the package, you’ll be met by the driver at the Budapest Airport or at arranged meeting point. This one and a half to two hour trip leads through the Hungarian Southern Great Plain. Near the end of the journey transfer will leave tarmac roads and continue on sandy tracks to the secluded lodge.
Welcome with Hungarian sparkling wine before being shown to your accommodation. Meet the freely kept horses on the pastures and the animal husbandry with Mangalicza pigs, Racka sheep and the guard geese. In the late afternoon, you might explore the resort and the nearby surrounding by Fat Tire Bike. (included in the package price)
Dinner is served with a 3 course menu or a menu consisting of 6 courses, pairing wine option is offered at the Homoki Fine Dine restaurant and will be prepared by a Dining Guide awarded chef. (Dinners and all drinks not included in the package price)

Day 2

Monday: Wake up and enjoy the freshly prepared breakfast served to your wish in your accommodation, in the breakfast room or on the covered terrace.(included in the package price).
Today’s ride will be a Village Tour to Ruzsa. The tour will pass near well kept crops and fruit orchards following the border of the surrounding farms until you reach a typical Hungarian village in the Puszta Plains of Hungary. Learn about its population and how they build their homes and yards, see happy pecking chickens in their gardens with crops of vegetables. The guide will show you the infrastructure like the school, major house, church and the park. Lunch break at the Presszo where they prepare gigantic Hamburgers Hungarian style. (Drinks and lunch included) On the way back you may travel through the poplar forests with shade, or the sunny route via the nearby plains.
During the remaining afternoon guests might relax at the pool, (open from May 1st until September 30th) that offers a sandy beach and infinite views across the Hungarian Puszta. Or have the option to add a wine tasting from different local regions.
Another delicious dinner at the restaurant (extra charge).

Day 3

Tuesday: Enjoy again the freshly prepared breakfast in the location of your choice, before following in the hoof prints of the 19th century highwayman, Rózsa Sándor. Discover the former wetlands and forests of the so called “Witch House” region. It represented an ideal area for bandits to hide themselves from the authorities. During this tour you will pass the legendary ‘Rózsa Sándor Tree’ which represents a more than 200 year old witness of trespassing highwaymen. Stop for a visit of the Rózsa Sándor  commemorative house in Ásotthalom to learn more about these famous folk heroes and their hunted lives. Lunch is a picnic in the forest, allowing you to tase a variety of local cold cuts and cheeses. (Drinks and lunch included). On the way back to the lodge you may get to try a fast gallop. In the late afternoon you could enjoy a body treatments like classical massage or Shiatsu (Not included in package price payable locally, must be booked in advance.)
Dinner tonight with your guide at restaurant with Gypsy music, a good chance to taste the local cuisine. (not included in the package price)

Day 4

Wednesday: After breakfast today you will tour to the buffalo reservation in Mórahalom. This long tour across the flat Puszta and its open plains offers beautiful scenery. Stop at the observation platform to view protected wetlands through the naturalization of water buffalo (bubalus bubalus) and a large number of waterfowl such as swans, gray herons, storks, stilts, herons, etc. Stop for lunch to to taste local dishes (Drinks and lunch included). Return towards the lodge on sandy paths with a chance to observe a fallow deer breeder. At the lodge you’ll be offered afternoon tea with the opportunity to exchange experiences and pictures with fellow guests before a final exquisite dinner at the lodge restaurant (dinner not included).

Day 5

Thursday: Enjoy a final meal and check out by 10am. If booked in advance, return transfer to the airport or down town Budapest.
