Horseback Riding in Tanzania

Serengeti Migration Ride

Overview

This safari explores the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of the wider Serengeti Ecosystem. It is an incredible opportunity to indulge in your sense of adventure and get truly off the beaten track with riding in some of the most untouched parts of the Serengeti.

We have timed this trip to give you the best chance of seeing the migration of the wildebeest and zebra from the Masai Mara back to the grassy plains of the Serengeti. Since the movement of the herds is dependent upon rainfall you need to be prepared to visit the migration by vehicle if the areas around the campsite are dry.

The rainstorms can be quite localized on the rolling plains of this vast expanse of Africa. You will come across Masai herding their flocks to water in age old hand dug wells. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Olduvai Gorge, the site of Mary Leakey’s discovery of Zinj, one of the very early hominids. With a comfortable camp moved ahead by your support team, and accompanied by great horses, this is sure to be a unique and unforgettable experience.

The first night is spent at a lodge near Arusha.

Seven nights are spent in the outfitter’s custom made mobile camp.

The food is of high standard, with professionally trained bush chefs. It is good wholesome home cooking in a mix of local and international styles.

  • Overview:
The horses are all purpose trained safari horses, with a mix of local breeds and thoroughbreds. All horses are given lots of love, care and attention, resulting in good characters and strong personalities, which allows a perfect fit with each rider. English saddles and cavalry saddles are available.
  • Horse Breeds:

  • Trip Pace:

Kilimanjaro International Airport

Tour Itinerary

Please note this is only an outline, with day-by-day arrangements open to variation by your guides at their discretion as the movement of game, weather or other local conditions require.

Day 1

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where a driver will meet you. The drive from the airport to the lodge takes about 40 minutes. Your first night is spent at a lodge situated on a golf, polo, and wildlife estate, depending on availability. Meet up with the rest of the group for sundowners and dinner hosted by one of the guides for the safari.

Day 2

The day begins with a leisurely breakfast. At 10:30am a short 10 minute drive to the private airstrip leads to a scenic flight over the dramatic Rift Valley, Lake Manyara and the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Upon arrival in the Serengeti, a warm welcome awaits before embarking on a 2-3 hour game drive through this iconic wilderness, offering a first glimpse of the diverse wildlife. After reaching camp and enjoying a delicious lunch a guide will outline the upcoming adventures. In the afternoon, head out for an evening drive, followed by a relaxing sundowner back at camp. The day ends with a dinner under the stars, a genuine African experience in the heart of the Serengeti.

Day 3

Over the following days, the journey unfolds across the vast plains, riverbeds and rich wildlife corridors, following the great wildebeest migration. Each day combines driving alongside giraffes and zebra, intimate wildlife encounters and moments of stillness beneath Acacia trees. Camp moves with the rhythm of the migration, including a raw flycamp experience in big cat territory and a visit past the historic Olduvai Gorge – the cradle of humankind. There will also be a full day excursion to Ngorongoro, the world famous crater and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and all days will be filled with unique scenery and an incredible abundance of wildlife, including a high chance of encountering the highly endangered black rhino. The safari continues with views of Ol Donyo Lengai, Tanzania’s only active volcano.

Day 9

An early breakfast in camp marks the start of the final morning. It’s time to say goodbye to the dedicated safari crew. Climb into safari vehicles for one last stretch through the wilderness, ascending into the Ngorongoro highlands and driving along the rim – a last glimpse of the wild heart of Tanzania. At the park gate the paved road signals a return to modern life. The drive to the airstrip takes roughly three hours, depending on the whims of African roads, with a stop at a local gallery for shopping and a chance to view or purchase Tanzanite – a rare gem found only in Tanzania. The Journey concludes with a short, scenic private charter flight, 30 minutes to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), offering a final aerial view of this extraordinary landscape. Here the journey comes to an end as everyone departs and continues onward, each carrying a piece of the Serengeti’s spirit into their next adventure.

The Tanzania trip was superb. Clearly, the outfitter is very experienced. The staff, horses, accommodations, food, sightseeing were outstanding. I can’t comment further. It was a wonderful introduction to Tanzania and the Serengeti.
