Horseback Riding in New Zealand

North Island Ride

The sparsely populated islands of New Zealand have magnificent, unspoiled scenery and make a superb destination for a horseback riding vacation.

Our tour takes place just two hours out of Auckland so you can easily stop there on the way to or from Australia. This program can be custom tailored to do virtually anytime your schedule permits.  The temperate climate makes it possible to ride there any month of the year. Maoris, the original settlers, were a Polynesian people like the Hawaiians who navigated thousands of miles in their open canoes to reach previously uninhabited New Zealand about 800 years ago.  Much of their ancient heritage still thrives to enrich the culture of the islands.  The English settlers did not begin to arrive until the early 19th century.

The country has a strong equestrian reputation and consistently produces of the world’s top 3 day event riders and some champion performance horses.

This beautifully green, agricultural country is a lovely setting for equestrian vacations.  You will ride through forests and traverse farmlands and pastures where they raise red deer, dairy cows and, of course, sheep for which New Zealand is famous.  You will also canter to your heart’s content on endless miles of uninhabited beach with sand dunes on one side and strong waves from the mighty Pacific beating down on the other.  You will be honored guests in the comfortable farmhouse of your hosts whose hospitality is legendary.  The broad choice of fresh sea food, vegetables, fruit and meat, to say nothing of the fine New Zealand wines is mouth-watering and you will have a good appetite to appreciate it after an active day of horseback riding.

Accommodations are at your hosts’ house situated on a 200 acre sheep and cattle farm, overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. The rooms at the farm can be private for those traveling separately, although sometimes the bathroom will be shared.

The food is of the highest quality and prepared fresh each day using foods grown locally - seafood, venison, lamb, beef and fruits and vegetables currently in season. Saddle bag lunches will be enjoyed at scenic stops along the day's trail.

Trip Itinerary

This is a suggested itinerary. If you have more or less time available we would be happy to make adjustments to the schedule.

Day 1

Riders will be met at the Auckland International Airport (or hotel) and transferred to South Kaipara Head. The journey travels through vineyards, market garden and farming areas. While enroute, a visit to places of personal interest, e.g. a vineyard, can be arranged. Familiarization with horse and tack completes day one before dinner.

Day 2

The first day of riding crosses farmland, past an old Maori tribe site, then on through Woodhill Forest and out to Muriwai Beach. The lunch team arrives and a leisurely hour eating in a sheltered part of the forest is enjoyed before the afternoon ride of more beach and farmland. Home for the evening meal and overnight.

Day 3

A forest ride to Lake Otatoa. Lunch on the shore of the lake before an afternoon of forest tracks that lead to a historic farm of 2,500 acres. Here the night may be spent in shearer’s quarters. Share the view and sunset with your hosts around a barbecue. (Riders have the option of returning to the house for overnight.)

Day 4

Ride to the end of the peninsula where one can enjoy panoramic views of the largest harbor in the Southern Hemisphere. Cross the wilderness flats, passing sand dunes of up to 60 feet in height, then out to the beach with nothing but sand and vigorous surf. Cover 10 miles of beach before re-entering the forest for the trek home.

Day 5

Depart for Auckland. Riders who have an afternoon flight may participate in a short ride before departure.
