Caribbean Tropical trail- beach riding in Costa Rica

Caribbean Tropical Trail

Ride Overview

The little country of Costa Rica, roughly the size of West Virginia, has an incredible diversity of flora and fauna and there is a great deal to explore here; from active volcanoes to palm-fringed beaches. Twelve percent of the land has been set aside as national reserves to protect the astonishing number of plants, birds, reptiles, insects and mammals. Costa Rica is a tranquil haven of democracy in Central America.  It has no army, excellent hospitals, well-educated people and a great respect for human rights. Ticos, as the Costa Ricans are known, are a friendly, helpful and tolerant people.  They favor moderation, and therefore have managed to avoid the political fanaticism of their neighbors.

On this ride you explore the less traveled Caribbean side of the country, surrounding the laid back and vibrant small town of Puerto Viejo with its unique Creole culture, brought about by its Afro-Caribbean heritage. Here you have the opportunity for both jungle and beach riding in Costa Rica. The lovely accommodations offer tranquility in the midst of the tropical jungle and at the end of the day you will fall asleep listening to the soothing sounds of the waves coming ashore and the tropical birds singing their beautiful songs.

Accommodations & Food

Accommodations are either at Los Continentes hotel or at Villas Lomas del Caribe depending on the number of riders.

The food is varied and delicious. Breakfasts consist of fresh fruits and juices, bread or muffins, along with eggs and cereal and the famous Costa Rican coffee. Lunches will be mostly picnics with sandwiches. Dinners will either be at local restaurants or served at the inns.

Ride & Horse Details

  • Overview:
The horses used for the ride are primarily Costa Rican Criollo and Paso Costariccense – the gaited horse of Costa Rica; a cross between an Andalusian and a Peruvian Paso, who are exceptionally rugged, well mannered and responsive, have a smooth trot that is traditionally ridden sitting rather than posting and are well suited to the trails of the area. As Costa Rican horses are fairly small, there is a weight limit of 200 pounds for riders on this tour. The saddles used are synthetic English or Endurance. The horses are ridden in a “Jaquima with a bozal” – a type of bit-less bridle made of rope or leather and are trained to neck rein.
