The Fit For Safari Riding Program has been created to instruct novice to intermediate riders in preparation for their first riding safari. Flatwork lessons are given each morning by Gerti, a certified FEI level one instructor. She specializes in theoretical and practical lessons, cross country jumping, and pole work. The safari portion of the trip is lead by her husband, Philip Kesseler, a qualified guide with the highest level of certifications from the Field Guide Association of South Africa. This combination is an ideal blend of instruction and safari in South Africa.
Base camp is located in The Makalali Game Reserve, encompassing 61,000 acres in the Lowveld region of the Limpopo Province, and providing riders with plenty of opportunity to discover the local wildlife, while honing skills valuable to any horseback riding safari.
Besides the famous Big Five, species to be seen include buffalo, wild dog, spotted and brown hyena, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, bushbuck, steenbok, duiker, impala, waterbuck, black-backed and side striped jackal, honey badger, baboon, vervet monkey, mongoose, warthog, bushpig, tortoise; special nocturnal creatures are porcupine, aardvark, civet, genet, caracal, serval, and water species such as hippo, crocodile, otter, and terrapin.
