Discover Cappadocia

Ride Overview

The Discover Cappadocia ride begins in Ortahisar and ends in Avanos, in the heart of Cappadocia, and is similar to the Fairy Chimney ride, differing in hotel accommodation and being a shorter length.  The Cappadocia region of central Turkey has been a meeting ground for European and Asian civilizations since long before the time of Alexander the Great.  More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greeks wrote about the fine horses raised in Cappadocia.  Those horses are the ancestors of the animals used now for the ride through this fascinating region.

Not only is the region rich in history, the natural wonders are unlike anything else in the world.  The heartland of Turkey is Anatolia, an ochre-hued high plateau rising progressively towards the east. It is broken by river valleys and ravines, dominated by volcanic peaks, and features dramatic rock formations in colors ranging from warm red and gold, to green and grey.  The most striking of these are what the Turkish call “fairy chimneys.”

There are few fences or walls to restrict your movement, and you are enthusiastically welcomed as you go by, rather than being unceremoniously chased away.  This is part of the immense attraction of riding in this region.  You will pass through many towns and villages on your journey and have a chance to meet the people who make their living from the land, far from the bustle of the ever-growing cities of Turkey, as well as see the distinctive stone architecture of the region.

This ride offers comfortable traditional inns and takes you off the beaten path, allowing you to explore the more remote valleys and villages where few tourists go.  There is an opportunity to visit the Göreme Open Air Museum to see the awe-inspiring painted churches built by exiled Christians during the Roman era, as well as watch Dervishes perform their rituals in a 13th Century Caravansarai.

The accommodations will be in a comfortable inns in the style of traditional "cave" hotels. Meals will be prepared by the camp chef and in cafes and restaurants in the villages along the route.
